Description

:iconyeahswingit:!!

Hugh and Giselle Lafayette, similar but not quite the same as they've been previously seen, dressed to the nines for the roaring twenties and Bayou city. (Giselle apparently still hasn't learned about shirts. She'll get there, one of these days)

Although they're overarchingly neutral, the duo is currently siding with the Baron.

History:

The twins aren't really inclined to say much about their past. They were born somewhere in France that could very well have been Paris, to a poor but loving couple who, as occasionally happens, died when the kids were seven.

Hugh and Giselle eventually found themselves shipped off to Bayou City in America, where their seedy Uncle Jasper suddenly found himself saddled with two extremely precocious children. Hugh's healing abilities became apparent at approximately the same time, and everyone quickly realized that apprenticing him to a local doctor would get him out of the house, out of Jasper's hair, and maybe do him a bit of good. Giselle, always inclined to keep an eye on her brother, charmed her way into learning from the mechanic down the street, and everyone seemed to get along well enough.

By the time they were twelve, the twins showed themselves somehow able to hold their own in their respective fields. They left Jasper's house in search of a place with a roof that didn't either leak or smell like cats, and ended up setting up shop by the waterfront, offering a combination of medical and mechanical patch-ups to pay the rent.

Unfortunately, even in a city like Bayou, two kids on their own causes problems. The local law enforcement had this strange desire to have minors living with their relatives or in orphanages, and the thugs wandering around saw tiny blond youngsters as easy pickings. When you can't beat 'em, you join 'em, and over time Hugh and Giselle started picking up odd jobs from local mobsters who could find a use for quick minds and small hands. The extra cash helped appease the cops, and being adopted as the cute young things of the underworld is a lot better than being targeted by ruffians every other Tuesday.

They'll take what they can get, have no grand loyalty to anyone other than themselves, and will do what it takes to get by, as comfortably as they can, and with as little interaction with Uncle Jasper as possible.

Hugh:

When you get right down to it, Hugh Lafayette is a brat. He's a child prodigy and something of a medical genius, and he knows it, doesn't like to be treated like a kid and doesn't have the patience for dealing with adults. He's quick-witted and somewhere between sardonic and sarcastic, and though he can be charming and angelic he usually makes it eminently clear through his body language that you're not really worth the effort. The two exceptions to this are his patients, who are usually in enough pain without his help, and his sister.

His clinic is generally walk-in, patients consisting of anyone who can get over the fact that their doctor is five feet tall and has no official certification, and manages to keep reasonably busy through a combination of relatively lower fees, a semi-decent bedside manner, and being somehow very, very good at what he does. Though he is a healer, and has strong magic in that area, he charges extra for that service, and generally works within the confines of traditional medicine.

Out of the realm of medicine, as much as he hates to admit it, he's generally useless. He's reasonably quick, and certainly very bright, but neither strong nor a strategist. He'll fight dirty if he has to, but generally avoids having to fight at all (also generally avoids dirt, when possible) and has no qualms about running, hiding, or throwing someone else in the line of fire. He's a doctor, not a street rat!

Giselle:

The older twin by a whole three minutes, Giselle Lafayette seems to be an absolutely delightful young woman -- most of the time. Mute, she is incredibly expressive with face and body language, and in general is charming, friendly, and uncomplicated. She's also not inclined to bother with things like doubt or second-guessing; she's very fond of the things she likes, and the things she doesn't like ... tend to get beaten with an uncomplicated pipe wrench, torn to small pieces, or blown up. Sometimes at the same time.

She runs a repair shop in Hugh's clinic, which started off entirely above-board. Over time, though, Giselle figured out that guns were just as easy to tinker with as clocks. Nowadays, she seems to split her time between elderly ladies with old, broken knickknacks; motorists who can't take care of their engines; and various lowlives wanting their weaponry to work better.

Giselle also has no problem with picking up any odd job that comes along, from moving furniture to breaking and entering to making-that-annoying-creaking-noise-go-away. She's not particularly intimidating, and is hardly a bodyguard, but she can hold her own surprisingly well in a scuffle; she doesn't carry a gun but can and will use one if she finds one, and the rest of the time does very well bludgeoning people with whatever heavy things she can find.
